Action Against Hunger Foundation

Non-governmental organization that fights against the causes and effects of hunger.

It was founded in France by a group of French doctors, scientists, and writers with a mission: to end world hunger. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Alfred Kastler was the organization’s first president.

It was initially mobilized to provide aid to Afghan refugees in Pakistan, to the most vulnerable communities in Uganda and to Cambodian refugees in Thailand.

It subsequently expanded to address humanitarian needs in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Balkans during the 1980s and 1990s.

Mission & Functions

Around 500 development workers and 8,000 employees work in the Action Against Hunger International Network in more than forty-five countries, coordinated from the headquarters in Paris, Madrid, London, New York, Montreal, Rome and Berlin around four areas of intervention: nutrition, health, food security and water and sanitation.

In the event of a serious natural or man-made crisis that threatens food security or leads to a famine situation.

In the event of a breakdown of the social fabric due to internal or external reasons that place certain populations in a situation of extreme vulnerability.

Where humanitarian assistance becomes a matter of survival.

Commitment

Action Against Hunger supports local populations and refugees in their most basic needs and in the most dangerous regions of the planet, providing nutrition, health care, hygiene and food security, teaching populations to be self-sufficient.
